Praying for Our Children and Our Schools

Today my son, Bo, began his first day of high school. After I took his picture with his Dad (much to his dismay), I drove him to school and dropped him off. I few tears fell from my eyes as I drove away. I decided a long walk would be the perfect medicine.

Just a few minutes into my walk, I ran into a mom taking a picture of her son on his first day of kindergarten. A flood of emotions filled my heart. How fast time goes by. I miss cuddling with Bo watching “Clifford the Big Red Dog” and going to Target and getting popcorn and a Coke for a special treat after nap time.

I love the young man God is molding him to be. I love that Bo is learning and growing in his education and in his faith. I love his wonderful (most of the time) sense of humor. But I still miss my little boy. The only thing that comforts me in these emotional moments is prayer. It brings me peace and returns joy to my aching mother’s heart.

Today, I want to share my prayers with you. Although we are states, even oceans, apart will you join me in praying these prayers for our children?

And please feel free to share your prayers in the comments section!!!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of children.  Thank You that before time began You knew we would be interconnected through Your Holy Spirit. We humbly come before You today recognizing our children are only on loan to us. As each year passes, they become more and more Yours, not ours. We ask You to help us release them to You so that You can accomplish Your will for their lives. How hard it is to let go. Help us as parents, families, and friends to get out of the way so that You can accomplish Your work in their lives. Help us to trust You. Give us the grace to wait on You. Your timing, Father is perfect.

Father, we pray that each one will know the depth of Your great love for them and know that You gave Your Son so that they could have life forever with you!

Father, we pray that they will call upon Your Son Jesus and confess Him as Lord and Savior of their lives.
Father, we pray they will develop a great love for You and a deep desire to have a personal relationship with You.

Father, we ask that You cultivate in each one a heart of prayer. Lead them to depend solely upon You for their every need.

Father, we thank You that You created them with a specific plan and purpose for their lives. Thank You that they are valuable and precious in Your sight. Father, give them the mind of Christ that is theirs in You and help them to fully know and love who they are in You and this great plan You have for them.

Father, we pray Your protection over them by the covering of the blood of Jesus. Give them discernment to recognize Satan’s lies and temptations. Grant them extraordinary wisdom and strength to combat Satan’s work through the power of Your Holy Spirit.

Father, may each of them know how extravagantly and unconditionally You love them…that You will never leave them or forsake them no matter what they do. May they be secure in that knowledge. Show them in very personal and powerful ways how wide and high and deep and long is Your love.

Father, we pray that they will treasure Your Word above all the riches in this World. Give them a hunger to read it and learn it. Teach them to love it and live their lives according to it.

Father, write Your Word on their hearts. Give them a heart to understand and obey it above all else. Move their hearts to live their lives according to Your Word…to live a life that honors and glorifies You in all they say and do.

Father, we pray that they will honor their bodies as Your temple and keep themselves pure in every way. Instill in them that they are created in Your image and are worthy of Your highest and best for their lives.

Father, teach them to submit to those placed in authority over them. Father, give them hearts of humility. Protect their hearts; keep them free of rebellion and disobedience.

Father, draw godly friends and mentors into their lives. Give them friends who are true, wise, kind, and encouraging. Give them great discernment as they choose those whom they will date. May all dating relationships make You the center and honor You.

Father, we ask that Your Truth will reign supreme in their hearts and minds. May they base their lives on the Truth of Your Word and not the lies of this world. We ask that they daily renew their minds with Your Truth and keep their thoughts on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, excellent, and worthy of praise.

Father, teach our children to trust in You with all their heart, lean not on their own understanding, and in all their ways acknowledge You so that You will direct their paths.

Father, fill our children with Your joy…not happiness…but true joy found only in You.
Father, consume their hearts so that they desire only You. Protect them from being people pleasers. May they stand confidently in who they are in You!

Father, we pray the armor of God over our children: the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the sword of the Spirit, the shield of faith, the belt of truth, and the shoes of the gospel of peace.

Father, plant Your love, Your presence, and Your Word deep within their hearts. May Your Word reach into the marrow of their bones and ignite a passion that is unquenchable. Cause them to love You with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength and let NOTHING override that passion.

Father, as they spend their days at school, let them stand apart. May they be light in darkness, joy in sadness, peace in discontent, and order in chaos. Let their character and integrity shine forth like the sun!

In their schools, Father, we pray that Your Word and the fear of the Lord would be the basis of wisdom and instruction. Father, we ask that You take our prayers and blanket each school, placing them under the shadow of Your wing.

For those teachers that believe in You, strengthen them and uphold them with Your mighty right hand. Father, give them an extra measure of wisdom, knowledge, and revelation to excel as teachers and shine in darkness. Provide them with opportunities to share their faith with faculty, staff, and administration and give them the courage to do it.

We pray for every level of administration. We pray for wisdom beyond comprehension as they make decisions. We pray divine direction. We pray that You would direct the steps of those making decisions for our children. Make Your way clear and place those who walk with You in places of authority and decision-making. Bless their efforts. Give them favor.

Through Young Life, Campus Crusade, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and other student ministries, use leaders and students to sweep each school with revival and evangelism. Guide, bless, and empower the leaders and students through the power of Your Holy Spirit. Go before them and open doors. Father, we boldly ask for many to come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and yield their lives to Christ.

Father, as we end our time in prayer, we boldly as that You would grow each of our children in wisdom and stature and favor with You and with man. Thank You in advance for all You will do in and through our prayers. We ask this in the powerful name of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord!

I would love for you to share your prayers!!

Standing with you in prayer,

  1. Wendy, you never cease to amaze me. Agreeing with every word from your beautiful prayer and lifting your momma’s heart as both of your precious children start school again.

    Love you!

  2. Sandra Brown says:

What an awesome prayer…it touches every area that we as parents are concerned about for our children. Praise God! Bless you Wendy!

  3. Wow, Wendy! THANK YOU! Tears of gratitude for you. Praying every morning that my daughters, young women both, return to Jesus Christ and the faith they were raised with. I am claiming God’s promises.

  4. Thank you for this wonderful prayer, Wendy. I printed it out and put it with my QT materials to pray it for my sons. Many, many thanks. 🙂

  5. Thank you Wendy for this beautiful and powerful prayer. You and your faith are inspirational. May the Lord bless all of our children and may He continue to bless you and keep you as you use your gifts of sharing Him and shining His light. The Lord always speaks to me through your beautiful prayers and posts! Blessings!

  6. Beautiful prayer Wendy. We have recently started a Cru (Student Venture) group in our area and I shared the prayer with them. Thank you for your obedience to Christ and sharing it with us. God Bless

  7. Wendy, I must confess that after reading your prayer, I see that I WANT and DESIRE many things for my kids. I WISH things were different in many ways. I FEEL bad when they aren’t
Ike I thought they should be…. But do I spend earnest time in deep prayer over them? I confess I don’t spend nearly enough time praying as I do worrying or wishing. Thank you for convicting me and by the powerful example of praying for my children.
By the way, I LOVED your book!

    • I miss my little boy too … my only biological son … the child that doctors told me I would never have. I love him more than my own life, I’m proud of the man he is becoming, and I look forward to seeing God’s purposes in his life fulfilled. But as I put him on a bus yesterday for Army Basic Training, I cried … I’m still crying … because he is my baby … and the memories seem only minutes old. I’m also crying over my failures & mistakes … wishing I could have a couple of “do-overs” … crying because I know that this isn’t the last time God will require me to let go of him. I’m glad that God created & understands our momma’s hearts, & grateful that He has been so gentle & patient with my reluctance & fears. When I have trouble pulling my eyes away from the temporal, I remember that His eternal plan & purpose hold promise that we can’t even imagine. I love that even though our roles are different now, no one can *ever* take our place in our children’s hearts or lives … what a gift! So, in spite of the tears that steam freely down my face, I’m trying to embrace this new chapter. Thank you for this beautiful prayer, Wendy, I copied it & have it right here on my desk … it will bless my time of adjustment & help me focus on releasing, letting go, getting out of the way, trusting & waiting. It will help me embrace the changes in my role in this new season and remember that this is about God’s glory … about His plans for my son. I love your heart.

  8. Wendy, Thank you for your prayer. Although all three of my children are now married, I’ll copy this and use it to pray for my grandchildren.

I wanted to share a hint with you on how to get your son to talk with you if you have trouble with that as I did, as my son moved into the high school years. He loved to go out to eat, and sitting across from him, I found to be the best time to communicate with him. Lots of times it was just the two of us, as my husband was traveling with his business a lot during those years. I look on it now and can see how important those times eating together were.

Kelly K. —-a message for you too. My son joined the Marines right out of high school. He was a reservist and spent two tours in Iraq right out of MP training. Praying is the most important thing for you to do for your son. God bless you and your son!

    Thanks, Wendy!

  9. Absolutely beautiful!

  10. Wendy,

I love this prayer. I have just printed it and plan on leaving post-its or index cards with the individual prayers in places like lunch boxes, night stands, bathroom mirrors, back packs, etc. for my kids. I know these prayers are scripture based. Any chance you can post the corresponding verses with the prayers, just for back up for my kids, knowing this is what God wants for them, not just me?

Thanks in advance! God bless your ministry. Thank you for allowing Him to use you.

  11. Beautiful prayer, Wendy! Thank you so much for posting it so us moms can pray it over our children. You are a blessing!

As a mom of two sons…………
God Bless you for your timing of this email.

  13. Lovely prayer, Wendy! You asked that we share ours- I went right through the new testament except gospels and Revelation- to pray the WORD over my daughter and foster son during some very difficult years. I love to pray The WORD because we know that God is watching over it, faithfully to perform it, and that His Word accomplishes the purposes for which it is sent forth. Here is the version with my daughter’s name in- obviously people use their chidren’s names instead.

Dear God, I PRAISE YOU THAT Amy is being encouraged in growing to know you better, and that she will have the rich experience of knowing you will real certainty and clear understanding. Reveal to her the mighty untapped treasures of knowledge and wisdom that lie hidden in You. May she trust you with each day’s problems and live in vital union with You. May her roots go down deep into You, Lord, and may she draw up nourishment from you. See that she goes on growing in You and that she becomes strong and vigorous in the truth that she has been taught. Let her life overflow with joy and thanksgiving for all that You have done. 1 Thessalonians 5.23:May the God of peace herself make Amy entirely pure and devoted to God; may her spirit, soul and body be kept strong and blameless until the day of your return. May your rich blessings be with her.
    2 Thessalonians 1.11-12:
I keep on praying that you will make Amy as well as she could wish to be!-rewarding her faith with your power. Then everyone will be praising the name of
    2 Thessalonians 3.3:
Thank you Lord that you are faithful and that you will make Amy strong and guard her from satanic attacks of any kind.
    1 Timothy 2.1:
I thank you for Amy and for ALL that you are going to do for her and in her.
I thank you that the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and that though sometimes Amy may fall, [goof-up] she will not be caste down, for you will help her up again by your hand. [Ps 37.23]
Thank you that you are showing Amy where she should go and that you are pointing out to her the paths on which she should travel, and show her where she should be.
    Philemon v6:
I thank you Lord that I keep on seeing the love that Amy has for you and seeing that she puts her trust in you. I pray that as she shares her faith with others that it will come to grip their lives too, as they see the wealth of good things in Amy that come from You.
I pray for Amy the wisdom that comes from heaven, which is first of all pure and full of quiet gentleness, peace loving and courteous. The kind of wisdom that allows discussion, and is willing to yield to others, full of mercy and good deeds, whole-hearted, straight-forward and sincere.
James 1.5-6:I pray that as she asks you for wisdom Lord that she will ask with a mind that expects an answer, for your word says that you are ready with a bountiful supply of wisdom for those who ask for it. May she ask in faith, so that you can give her a solid answer.
    Ephesians 1.15.20:
I never stop thanking you for Amy Lord and I pray to you constantly asking that you give her wisdom and for her to see clearly and to really understand who Christ is, and what you have done for us. I pray that her heart will be flooded with light so that she can see something of the future that we have been called to share. I want her to realize that God has been made rich because we who are Christ’s have been given to her. I pray that she will understand how incredibly great is your power to help those who believe in you. It is the same mighty power that raised you from the dead! And, we are joined with you and with each other by the Spirit. And we are a part of the dwelling place of God! At last we shall be truly filled up with God Herself. We will become full-grown in the Lord – yes – to the point of being full with Christ [.Ephesians4.13]
I am sure Lord, that You who began the good work in Amy will be faithful to complete it, and that you will keep on helping her to grow in grace until; your task in her is finally complete. My prayer is that she will overflow more and more with love for others, and at the same time will keep on growing in spiritual knowledge and insight.
Colossians1.9-12:I ask You to fill her with understanding of what you want her to do. May she be filled with the knowledge of your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. May she walk in a ,manner worthy of You, Lord, living a blameless life. May she the way she lives always please and honour You. May she always be doing good kind things for others while at the same time getting to know You better and better. May she please You in all respects . May she bear fruit in every good work. May she be strengthened with power according to your glorious might. May she be filled with glorious strength so that she can keep on going no matter what happens – always full of the joy of the Lord. May her love for you run so deep that she can’t help but give glory and honour to you. May your mighty energy at work within her enable her to do the work that you have called her to do.

All scriptures from the Living Bible.

  14. Oh Wendy. You have no idea the power… the emotions… the renewed hope… the passion… the belief to overcome my unbelief… the faith… the hope… the love… that this prayer flooded my heart with. Between going back to school and some painful growing pains we’ve been going through raising our daughter, our hearts as parents have been challenged. But God is so good! Your prayer is one of the beautiful gifts He’s bestowed on us so we don’t grow weary in doing good! Yes, in the proper time we WILL reap a harvest if we faint not!

I forwarded this prayer to my husband so we both pray this over our daughter, her school, teachers, etc. I’m also going to send the link to all my girlfriends. Thank you sweet friend. I love you!

  15. Hi Wendy,

I too have a son, Noah, who just entered 9th grade public high school on Aug 22nd. We have homeschooled him most of his life so this is a big leap of faith in many ways for our family. I cried and hugged him a lot the day before he started school, but tried to be strong on the first day for him. Also, we are home schooling our daughter this year for 8th grade, and I wanted to make her first day of school special. So I was sad but trying to be upbeat for her, all at the same time.

That first day I listened to a few songs that helped me put my eyes on Jesus. My hope, my savior, the one who died for me and for my son. I knew He would not let me down. God is in control and will accomplish what he has set out to do. So I will have faith and believe in His plans for Noah.

I am still saddened that Noah is gone 9 & 1/2 hours each day (because he is in Cross Country as well), but I am also very proud of him and the young man he is becoming. He loves the Lord and wants to do the will of God in his life. Things have been a little crazy around here but God has shown us great favor through this adjustment.

I pray for the Lord to bring Noah friends that want to walk with Jesus too. He has started the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is active with the Rock Hill Advance Youth Group.

Please keep Noah in your prayers. I will pray for Bo. 🙂

  16. Thank you so much for that prayer. I will repeat that often! It is also a great reminder to me as a parent to remember to pray over so many different areas of their lives… with my girls being young I don’t think to pray for the decisions they will make as they get older, friends, boyfriends, etc so this will help me to remember all of that. I am so thankful to be a mother but it sure can be scary watching our kids grow up in this world. My prayer is that they will keep God’s word in their hearts and minds all the time and not give in to the world views that many others around them have. I pray that they can be witnesses to their friends and be the light our world so desperately needs. Thank you again for sharing what God has placed on your heart! You are a blessing to me and so many others!

    • You are so welcome! It is my joy and delight for us to share our heart and our prayers for our children. We are all in this together!

  19. Flora Eyimife says:

Hi Wendy, thanks for guiding us to pray for our children. This is highly inspirational. I am taking it upon myself to use this prayer as a guide for praying for my teenage daughters who are in boarding school. May the Lord strengthen you more and more as you spend time in His presence to draw strength for our children. More grace!
