A Prayer for the Hearts Who Ache this Christmas

Christmas brings great joy and incredible highs.

But, it can also bring deep sadness and heartbreaking lows … mostly because of relationships. Loved ones who’ve betrayed us. Hurt us. Abandoned us.

Satan uses these pain-filled places to steal our joy and draw us away from the very peace Jesus came to give.

So, how can we effectively navigate heartache and hurt during this season?

Prayer and Love … the love of Jesus.

His love in us enables us to overcome the grief, heartache and hurt. It’s our choice. We can choose to live steeped in anger and bitterness. Or we can choose to surrender our hurt to Jesus. The only One who can truly take it and transform us through it. It’s when we truly understand and live in the extravagant, lavish love of the Father that we can surrender the grief and forgive the hurt.

Below, please find a prayer taken from my new Bible study, “I Am Loved: Walking in the Fullness of God’s Love.”  If your heart aches this Christmas, please pray this prayer. Personalize it. Make it your own.

Heavenly Father, I confess that my perception of love is so vastly different from Yours. Oftentimes I view people’s actions through the lens of my wounded soul. I sift people’s words through the hurt piled up in my heart. I know deep down inside that I don’t understand Your love. Help me surrender my inaccurate, preconceived notions of love. Open my heart to receive and embrace authentic love … Your love … the kind of love that laid down its life for me. Enable me to comprehend the vastness of this love. Soak it deep into the marrow of my bones so that it becomes one with my soul, and I truly live loved. And then transform my heart from the inside out with Your love so that I can be a glowing example of Your lovingkindness. Through the power of Your Holy Spirit, enable me to walk in that love, in any situation, in any relationship, anytime, anywhere. Help me to believe the best and forgive the worst. May I reflect the fruit of Your love in all I say and do. I ask this in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.

God’s Word says the prayers of His daughters are powerful and effective.

If you’re hurting and prayed this prayer, leave a short comment letting me know. No need to share details. I know these are hard things to share. Later this week, I’ll pray for you by name. And, if you have a few moments, pray for a few of the names in the comments, and I ask for your prayers as well.

I trust God will answer our prayers and do a mighty work in our midst. I believe that by the power of His Holy Spirt, WE WILL BE GLOWING EXAMPLES OF GOD’s LOVINGKINDNESS wherever Christmas finds us!!

Merry Christmas!

  1. Merry Christmas!

  2. Dear Wendy! The Lord worked HIS miracles through Your message today and the prayer you lead me on was such a blessing! I have been praying to give Jesus all of my aches in my heart for HE is the only Healer of all. I love the whole prayer, but this stuck out ….”And then transform my heart from the inside out with Your love so that I can be a glowing example of Your lovingkindness.” You have helped Jesus touch me this day to start my Christmas spirit on my first day off from teaching saxophone. Let me go out and teach the Love of Jesus everyday, all year!

  3. Thanks, Wendy. This has been a tough season and I appreciate your prayers. Praying for you, too.

  4. Just what I needed today. Thank you.

  5. Thank you Wendy for your post. There is so much discontent in relationships within my extended family and my heart hurts. I pray for peace within all of our hearts.

  6. Thank you for this prayer. I needed this today!

  7. I am praying your prayer over my life as I struggle with welcoming my 24 year old drug addict son named John into my home for Christmas. Please join me in prayer for him. May I reflect Christ’s love to him this Christmas. Thank you and I am looking forward to your I Am Loved online bible study starting soon.

    • Praying for you Paula! And for your boy! May God surprise you this Christmas in the most special way. May He draw you near, fill you with His Spirit and let His overflow. May your son’s heart be tender!

    • Beautiful Paula, my heart is always captivated by the story of the Prodigal Son. Oh the love of the Father… who waits watching the horizon… who runs to His son, smothering him in kisses… Grace. Wildfire love. Giving his son true identity. Regardless of the past. Even the present.

Thank You Papa for this modern-day prodigal son story. The story is really about the love of the Father. I see You working so mightily through Paula. Sustain her. Let Your love and grace continue to pour out of Paula. Let that perfect love break every chain of her son’s addictions. Free this captive. Let the heavenly party begin in Jesus Name amen!

Wendy, thank you for wonderful YOU. As always, you are such a precious gift from God Himself. Better than any gift that could be wrapped under a tree. I love you.

  8. Thank You Wendy for your post. My heart hurts every day because of broken relationships but it is especially hard this time of year. I pray for forgiving hearts in my family as well. I will be praying for you and your wonderful ministry too.

  9. Thank you Wendy for your devotional today and for your prayer! I could use your prayers today! Thank you.

  10. Thank you for this. Sometimes it’s just less messy for me to hide the hurt and move on but that doesn’t mean it goes away

  11. Marilyn in East Texas says:

When the heart is full the eyes overflow. Thank You Wendy for this prayer and for praying for me.

  12. Natalie Malec says:

This prayer couldn’t have been spoken more perfectly for my husband Mark. Praying this over him and praying for you and those who have commented on your blog.

  13. Lesley Boyer says:

    Thank you.

  14. Thank you for this much needed message today. I not only prayed this prayer, but have printed it to paste into my bible journal for reference again especially during the holidays. Thank you Wendy!

  15. About a month ago, my children and I were in a fatal accident that left my daughter with multiple skull fractures. The year was already difficult as it was with broken dreams and pain from being abandoned. I tried to make sense of my chaos. But got no answer. As it is our Christmas is quite but we are thankful to be alive. And my daughter progressing beautifully. I didn’t sign up for that but God knows best.

  16. Thank you

  17. I prayed. Thank you. Merry Christmas!

  18. Paula in OKC says:

Thank you for the prayer and reminding us that God loves us more than we can ever understand. I pray that God will open all our hearts to accept His love even though we may feel unworthy. I feel that if we can accept and feel God’s love, it will naturally overflow into our relationships and change our perspective on the trials we all face. Wendy, you are a blessing to us all.

  19. Dear Wendy, lovely morning to you, thanks so much for this prayer. Truly it reminds me of God’s redeeming and Calvary love. He loves us beyond our understanding. Have a pleasant day in the Lord.

    Hugs
    V

  20. Thank you Wendy. My heart is so heavy as I bury my
husband today. 41 year and 2 beautiful joys and 4 awesome grandsons. I’m trying to be strong for everyone else, but the silence is deafening in this house. So many decisions and no one to help. Please pray that a make the right ones.
Prayers to all on this list.

    • Praying for you Donna! May you sense the presence of our Heavenly Father today and always!! So sorry for your loss.

    • Grieving for you and praying for you Donna
Praying for wisdom and for the Lord Himself to hold you in His Arms
and may you hear His song in the night watches

The Eternal God is your refuge and underneath are the Everlasting Arms

    • You have been on my heart non-stop since I learned you lost your husband. God laid you on my heart first thing this morning. Please know I am praying for you and for provision for your every need as the Lord brings you to mind (which is often).

Heavenly Father, only You truly understand the deep ache in Donna’s heart. The emptiness that fills her home as she longs for the presence and physical touch of her soul mate. Abba Father, wrap Your arms around her. Hold her close. Comfort her as only You who are THE Comforter can do. By the power of your Spirit, bring signs and wonders of her husband’s sweet presence in very intimate ways. Ways she knows it’s You moving in her midst, meeting her in her grief. Thank You for the hope she can hold on to that one day she will be reunited and look into his tender eyes and hear his voice again. We ask this all in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

  21. Please pray for healing within my family. It is so broken. Merry Christmas!

    • Lord I lift up Donna and her family to You. Grant them peace, comfort, strength and courage as a broken family desperately needing Your mighty healing hand. We trust and believe You are capable of anything. Amen.

  22. Thanks for this Wendy! Praying for those who can relate and are hurting this Christmas! May we all cling to the truths you point us to!! Merry Christmas!

  23. Oh Wendy thank you for this beautiful and powerful prayer! I sent it to my Mom. Please pray for her (Sharon) this is our fifth Christmas without my little brother and she’s really struggling. She arrives here Saturday for two days and I know it will help improve her outlook once we are together. I’m so grateful she has let Jesus into her heart, without Him it would all be so hopeless for her! #yayGod

Merry Christmas Wendy! Love and appreciate you!

  24. Wendy,
    Thank you.
    The Lord speaks through you.
What a sweet and comforting thought that you are praying for us by name.
    Loved the quote:
    If Christmas is hard,
focus on the Christ of Christmas.
    It is very hard….
thus praying for a deeper revelation of HIM.

  25. Kathy Harris says:

When I read the part of the prayer that said “I know deep down inside I don’t understand your love”, my heart was squeezed. Oh how I want to understand and know, to refect His love from the inside out, all the time, anywhere!

  26. This prayer gave me hope for the future as my youngest sister has cut me off from her and her family. She has been distant and doesn’t communicate for more than three years. I sent her a card for Christmas, but I don’t expect her to reciprocate. May the Lord heal this relationship and send me a love for her despite her obvious dislike of who I am.

  27. Prayed many times today. This one closed out my day. Thanjk you

  28. Thank you. I know God led me to this devotional and this study.

  29. Thankyou Wendy for this beautiful prayer…reminding me of the powerful love of our Heavenly Father, and how He deeply desires His children to walk in this love, and in His fullness and grace every day, victoriously.
