Praying the Promises Part 2 – Struggling with Unbelief

Friends,

Wow! Your response to Part 1 of our series, Praying the Promises of God, amazes me. I love how you shared your stories and the passages that have ministered to you. And, I’m deeply grateful for the words of encouragement you left for me. They truly bless me as I continue to teach God’s Word and slowly work on my next book on prayer. Your comments reveal how women not only love to pray but desire a deeper understanding of prayer and a more active prayer life.

This week our topics are “The Word,”  “God’s Sovereignty,” and “God’s Provision.”

THE WORD

Luke 24:31-32: “Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’”

Jeremiah 15:16: “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, Lord God Almighty.”

Psalm 1:1-3 “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”

Words the Lord brought to mind …

Give My Spirit Lordship over your heart and My Word Lordship over your mind.

Ask Me for fresh manna and new revelations as you meet Me in My Word.

Beware of only ingesting My Word; digest it so it soaks to the marrow of your bones and becomes part of who you are.

My Word is health to your body and healing to your bones. Don’t neglect feeding your body and your soul. I created you; you are precious to me, and I know what you need.

GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY (God is in control)

Matthew 28:17-18: “When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.’”

Colossians 1:16-17: “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together”

Job 26:14: “And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?”

Isaiah 55:8-9: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.'”

Isaiah 46:9-10: “Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’”

Words the Lord brought to mind …

Every season has its own beauty, look for it! I am there in your midst. Look for Me. Not one thing you are walking through and experiencing is out of My control. I see you.

Don’t miss the wonder of I Am. Of who I am. I Am the One True God. There is no one greater or more powerful. Trust me with all that burdens your heart … that you can’t understand … that you feel you cannot bear … because I am over it all, and I am enough.

I am completely faithful with each place I walk you through, the valleys and the mountaintops. With each place, trust me because I’m drawing you closer to Me.

GOD’S PROVISION

2 Corinthians 9:8: “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

1 Corinthians 2:9-10: “However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ – the things God has prepared for those who love him—These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.'”

Ephesians 3:20: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

Psalm 107:8-9: “Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”

Words the Lord brought to mind …

I am Jehovah Jireh, your Provider. What I want most is to give you more of Me. Delight yourself in ME, and I will give you the desires of your heart.

I am the God of all grace who longs to give you an unlimited supply of My riches.

Don’t try to do this on your own. Come to Me, My child. Remember in Me, you lack nothing.

I may provide differently than you have asked. Trust Me. I know what is best for you. Be thankful and invest where I have you. You will be blessed when you do.

I am the All-Sufficient One.

It’s God’s sovereignty and provision I seem to struggle with the most. I ask and pray for things that seemingly align with God’s Word and His good plans for me or my family. I tell Him if He answers my prayer, He’ll get all the glory. It will point others to Him. It will grow my child’s faith. But, then, that specific answer never comes. Sometimes, it’s quite the opposite. That’s hard. 

It’s in those places I have to trust God’s sovereignty. A sovereignty I know is bathed in love. It’s not a hammer. It’s not cold and calculating. It’s not ruled by harsh decrees. God’s sovereignty flows from a Father’s heart consumed by lavish love for His children. A God who promises to give us the desires of our heart when our desires align with His. That is the key. We’re on a journey of sanctification … of God working in and through us to mold and shape us to become more like Jesus. So, when God withholds that answer or answers it differently, we must trust God is protecting us. What we are seeking will not be beneficial or productive to our process of becoming more like Jesus.

Oh, friends, as we leave today, know your prayers are heard by the One whose love runs deep for you. Who gave His only Son for you. Who placed His Spirit inside of you so you would never ever be without His presence. Let’s commit to trust Him with our unanswered prayers today. 

Write your prayer of commitment in the comments. It can be as short as 3 words: “Help my unbelief.” After you share your prayer, read the prayer above yours and pray for her. WE ALL BELIEVE. But sometimes we struggle with unbelief in the “waiting room” of prayer. So, let’s pray for a mighty move of God in our community this week as we boldly ask God to help us with our unbelief, remembering and claiming the promises above.

      Abba, together with Jean I bring to you her plea to trust you more God. Trusting can be or even feel tricky for many reasons. Yet I love how you tell us through Jeremiah that we are blessed when we trust you, when we place our confidence on you. Would you show Jean what that could look like practically?       ABBA, here is your precious girl Kim. She knows you are working but is asking of your patience and strength as she waits on you. Help her to believe you in the wait, amplify your strength in her weakness and would you please steady her heart. In Jesus name. Amen!

  7. I pray for my faith to be strong, to not waver, and to know without doubt God is able to do anything He promises which is the faith that Abraham had. (Abraham’s faith in God is told in detail in Romans 4: 1-25.)

  9. Oh Father, yesterday I prayed strongly for my son. Yet he had a terrible day. But after talking with him more, I learned that it was better than the previous day. And… He’s ready to talk to a counselor about his depression and mood swings. Thank you for this, Father. I can see you working. It’s just that he’s my only child still walking with you, so why the depression? Why can’t he walk in joy and victory? I choose to trust your sovereignty and provision. Help my unbelief, Father God.

    • Amen! Standing with you sweet friend and praising God for the good days!! Praying God shines His Light into the depths of your son’s depression so there is no more room for darkness!!

  10. Prayer for my sons faith to grow and trust in Gods sovereignty and provision thru his trials… that he would hide Gods Word in his heart.. Lord I pray this same prayer for Marcies son… that he would trust and stand on your truth and not his feelings. Deliver him from depression and the fiery darts the enemy is throwing at him right now. Prayer for our mother-hearts to continue to entrust our children into your care..🙏💞

  11. Thank You Father God for your Presence and Holy Word. Please help my unbelief. I pray Your best for my family. I lift up Marcie and her son and family to You, Father.

    • Father I lift Gayla up to you right now. Fill her with “JOY” today. Encourage her Father and show up “BIG”in her life. Put her in the boat Father God and get her to the other side, just like you did for your disciples in the storm. Hep her to be the bright light in her family.

  12. Father God, “HELP” me. My 4 month grand daughter is having tests tomorrow for cerebral palsy and instead of trusting you, I am filled with anxiety and worry. “HELP” me to know in my heart YOU are BIG and NOT just in my mind.

    • Amen. Standing with you and asking for God’s peace to consume you!! And praying for your sweet granddaughter. God is walking with all of you and will not leave your side or hers.

      Abba Father, I lift Chris and her granddaughter up to Your throne. I thank You Lord that it is YOU initiating contact with us. You take Chris’ right hand and you tell her “Do NOT fear, I will help you.” Amen. Isaiah 41:13

    Dear Lord,
    For Chris, speak to her heart. Your will for her grandchild is always best. I know she wants her will to be aligned with yours. Praising you banishes anxiety. Bring to her mind special songs that elevate her mind to your throne room and into your heart. Because of Jesus we pray, Amen.

    Lord, give me patience in the waiting for test results for family members. Help me with the frustration and anger I have for this time of waiting and to keep my eyes focused on You. It’s in your Almighty name I pray. Amen.

    Lotd, i pray for Susan. Help her to trust you in all things even when it feels like she is alone and there is no plan. I pray she remembers Jeremiah 29:11. Help her to know she is never alone or forsaken and there is not a minute that goes by that you do not think of her. Be her strength when she is weak and may she give your glory in all things that come whether it is the way she wanted it or not. Remind her that you have her best interest at heart. In Jesus name.   29. Help my unbelief! I am calling on my Jehovah Jireh…my Provider, as I have just took a leap of faith and quit my job that was very stressful on my emotional health and am hoping and praying that I will find another before my two weeks’ notice is up.

    Praying for you to put all your trust in Him, Susan G.! Please, Lord, help Susan G. fix her eyes upon You and You only for the problems in her life, right now. Help her to feel Your presence in all situations.

      Jesus, Savior, friend… please help!!! Mary feels like she is drowning and I can only imagine what that might feel or look like, but not you, you know exactly what she is feeling. So, Lord, Emmanuel, God with us, God with Mary, be with her. Help her to see you are near and that you see her. Jesus, would you embrace her right where she is. Affirm her in the truth that you will never leave her nor forsake her. In your name I pray. Amen.

    • Mary, asking God to set your feet on solid ground. God is Your Rock! Stand on Him and His Word and His promises. Reach out to others for help, sweet friend. And, praying for times of rest … times to sit with God’s Word to be refreshed.

      Mary He tells us in Isaiah 41:13 that He is reaching down and taking hold of our right hand. He is our help. Keep looking up, take His hand. He is your steadfast anchor. He will not let you drown. Lean into Him, hear His heartbeat. He is with you dear sister.

  34. Help me to trust you more every day – even when & especially when I don’t understand the why of what is happening.

    • Lord, I lift Cherie to you now. Work in her heart and through the circumstances of her life to help her trust you more. Scripture tells us your ways are not our ways, which sometimes makes things hard to understand…in those moments may we cling to Truth and believe you are who you say you are. May we trust YOU with all of our heart and lean not on our own understanding. Lord, I ask you to assure Cherie of your goodness today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

  35. This past Sunday in church God put on my heart is to “Be on my guard” and “Stand firm.” I believe they are both connected to the struggle with unbelief. When Satan brings doubts I need to be on my guard because he will just attempt to bring more lies and drive the wedge deeper. In those same moments I have to choose to stand firm because the pain of life, the wrong thoughts in my mind and fickle feelings in my heart can knock me down. These actions will help when I struggle with unbelief related to what I believe about God or myself, where He’s leading me or what He’s asking of me.

    So Lord, help me be on my guard and stand firm no matter what this day brings. Renew my mind and set my eyes on you.

        Thank you Wendy. I love all of your studies but especially when you focus on prayer. I find prayer hard but I know there is power there so I keep going with confidence to the throne of grace. Thank you for praying with me for both of my sons. I covet your prayers. Looking forward to your book on prayer. I have been waiting for that one to be born for a long time.

  37. Dear Lord, I pray for Sheila and her sons. Bring healing from diabetes to her younger son. I pray for godly wives for both her boys and pray that you will give them wisdom in their relationships. Help Sheila to trust them into your hands.
    I pray also for my family as my son moves into the teen years. Draw him to yourself, Lord, and give him a desire to walk with you. I pray that he will soon make a public profession of faith.

    Oh Lord, I want more. I want so much more of You. You have been so faithful to answer my prayer that You be my sole/soul aim in life this past year. The Words I read I want to sink deep into my marrow. I thank You that my adult children and daughter-in-law all love You and want more of You. I do pray for a godly husband for my daughter, one that will come alongside her to love her and adore her as You do. One that wants to fiercely protect her as You do. Continue to heal my husband from the bladder cancer. You are precious and my heart overflows because of You. Amen

      Thank You for Shelley’s pure heart. She’s aligned with You… thirsty for the love You’ve showered on her. Let her live in Your provision… the exceedingly, abundantly above what she can ask or imagine provision… You tell us that we see the “exceedingly, abundantly above what we can ask” for miracles when it’s “according to Your power at work in us.” And Shelley is giving You full room to move! We trust that You are preparing her daughter’s husband for that God-authored moment when the two meet. Give him a heart that fully understands his value in Christ Jesus. Let him bask in the reality that it’s Your love for him, above his love for You. Let him marvel in how Jesus loves the church and give him the thirst to lay his life down in crazy love for his future wife. Papa, You have begun a good healing work in Shelley’s husband’s body. Bring this to completion so we can celebrate the word REMISSION together! Jesus took upon our sins AND INFIRMITIES and by His stripes, her husband is healed. Let him walk in that reality!     I specifically love how you took God’s words and created these love whispers so our Papa can speak His truth straight to our hearts. It is indeed powerful in the “waiting room” of prayer. I love that term!

    Thank You Heavenly Father for this amazing community that You have created through Wendy. Thank You that You’re holding us as we wait to see what the next scenes of our lives look like. For my family, we perceive the new thing that You are doing. Thank You for the streams in the wastelands. We know that You will be opening doors no human can open, and closing doors that aren’t from You. Help us to trust the process. You have plans to prosper us, not harm us. You have our hope and our future so tightly held in Your heart. Remind us through our journey that Your ways are higher than ours. And sometimes Your answers don’t look like the answers we anticipated. And if that happens, give us hearts that celebrate because it’ means You’re blessing us even more than we realize.   42. Father God, help me in my unbelief. Help me to believe that I am still saved and still yours. Thank you that you have answered some of my prayers. You do hear my cries. Thank you for saving me, Jesus. Help me trust in You with all my heart.

  43. I think I struggle more with not understanding “why,” not necessarily “doubting” or a lack of “trust.” Then again, who am I to actually comprehend God’s decisions? My Bible study buddies and just started Seamless by Angie Smith and she wrote: I believe God is good even when I don’t understand all the particulars of His decisions. I feel like that is where God and I are in our relationship. I may not get it, but I know God well enough to know every prayer (answered, unanswered, answered differently) is answered out of His indescribable love.

  44. Greetings in Jesus’ Name: I am finally reading this post, and it is great! I especially like Job 26:14: “And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?” Wow! I want to trust my loving Heavenly Father and His sovereignty more and more. This verse calls for much anticipation of God’s mighty intervention in difficult situations here and now, and the soon coming of our Savior, God’s Son! Glory! I want to become less and less a “Mrs. Fix-it Fox” (my last name is Fox, too 🙂 and leave things in God’s hands, trusting fully in His goodness, mercy and grace!

  47. Trouble, challenges, pain, suffering, grief, transition, change and renewal come to us all. Some seasons of life are more enjoyable than others. Thank you for being a source of light, encouragement and comfort to humanity when they are suffering, grieving and transitioning.
